On Tuesday, May 27, a media literacy workshop was held in the elementary school “Sveti Sava” in Požarevac as part of the “Lie Detector” project. Since research shows that young people are primarily informed through social networks, students are first familiar with how they function and have established their knowledge of what an algorithm is. Part of the workshop on social networks was held by Marko Tadić, an expert in social networks. The students were then reminded of the basic concepts of media literacy with the history teacher Živojin Ivković. Through their answers, they showed that they also think about the content that reaches them, and workshops like this serve them to upgrade their knowledge. They were shown examples of different news from social networks and portals, where they analyzed whether it was fake news, manipulation or clickbait, and then, through a practical task, they themselves found themselves in the role of those who create fake news, in order to better understand the mechanism of their creation. Namely, they were divided into groups and based on the photo they made a fake news, thinking about the target group to which it should be intended. After the workshop, several students shared their impressions from the workshop with us and stated what they had learned. The “Lie Detector” project is jointly implemented by the Association for the Education of Youth and Adults Požarevac and Boom 93, as part of the “Youth and Democratic Development” project, which is implemented in partnership with the Belgrade Open School and with the support of Sweden.
