On Tuesday, May 20, the Medical School in Požarevac held a media literacy workshop as part of the “Lie Detector” project. The workshop for students was held by Petar Pantić, a history teacher, and Marko Tadić, an expert in social networks. With Petar Pantić, the students were reminded of the basic concepts of media literacy. Through examples from various portals and social networks, the students saw the importance of checking sources and were introduced to various techniques for recognizing disinformation and media manipulation. Marko Tadić introduced the students to the way in which social networks attract our attention and explained to them what algorithms are. The students also received recommendations from him for various films that deal with this topic. In the second part of the workshop, students immediately had the opportunity to apply what they had learned, through a practical task, where they themselves created news stories, some of which were true and some were false. They worked in groups. While one group presented, the other groups analyzed whether the news was true or false. Živojin Ivković, a history teacher, held a workshop for teachers, where he presented them with material and tools that they can use in dealing with media literacy topics. After the workshop, we spoke with students Filip Radovanović, Nikolina Stevanetić and Nikola Stevanetić, as well as with sociology and civic education professor Tanja Bošković. They shared their impressions of the workshop and their thoughts on media literacy with us. Serbian language and literature professor Jelena Ilić also attended the workshop. “As an observer of the media literacy workshop, I gained a positive impression of the way the students were involved in the work. The workshop was dynamic, age-appropriate and encouraged critical thinking among young people. Students actively participated in discussions, expressed their opinions and showed a high level of interest in the topic. I believe that this kind of education is of great importance for developing awareness of the role of the media in modern society,” she said. The “Lie Detector” project is jointly implemented by the Association for Youth and Adult Education Požarevac and Boom 93, within the “Youth and Democratic Development” project, which is implemented in partnership with the Belgrade Open School and with the support of Sweden.
