On Thursday, May 15, a media literacy workshop was held at the Požarevac Polytechnic School as part of the “Lie Detector” project. Petar Pantić, a history teacher, introduced the students to techniques for detecting fake news and misinformation through various examples from portals and social networks, he reminded the students of the basic concepts of media literacy and discussed with the students the importance of checking sources, while Marko Tadić, an expert in social networks, explained to the students how algorithms work and why social networks attract us so much.
The first part was followed by a practical one, where students in groups made different news stories, some of which were fake and some of which were true. Each group presented their work, and the other groups, applying the acquired knowledge, analyzed what was true and what was false.
Slobodan Jotić, teacher of Serbian language and literature, held a workshop for teachers, who were presented with possible approaches to this topic in teaching. After the workshop, we spoke with Novak Stepanović, Marta Milošević and Ilija Rakić, students who participated in the workshop, who shared their impressions with us. Also, we discussed the way in which they are informed.
Teachers Vladislava Stević and Đorđe Miladinović shared their impressions from the workshop. The goal of these workshops is to develop students’ critical thinking and media literacy skills.
