Sustainable horizons
The campaign to raise awareness among the local population about the processing of bulky waste is aimed at solving a problem that is of wider importance, both for the local community and for the regional, national and even international context. The problems of bulk waste management reflect global challenges in terms of environmental protection, pollution reduction and promotion of sustainable development. At the local level, an insufficiently efficient system of collection and recycling of bulky waste leads to its uncontrolled disposal, which negatively affects the quality of life, the aesthetics of the city and the health of the population. Regional and national aspects of the problem are reflected in the lack of uniform standards for waste management and the need to improve infrastructure. The international context includes alignment with global sustainable development goals and practices in waste management, which requires innovative solutions based on countries and regions that have effectively solved the problem of disposal and processing of bulky waste. The key problems we address and recognize here relate to the lack of awareness and education of the local population about the importance of proper disposal and recycling of bulky waste, first of all, as well as the need to improve existing collection, transport and recycling systems. The target groups and users of the project, which primarily include the local population, have a crucial need for information and resources that would enable them to gain insight into more efficient management of bulky waste. The desire to solve the problem arose after recent inscriptions in the local media where PUK “Communal services” Požarevac appeal to citizens not to throw bulky waste everywhere and thus encourage the creation of illegal landfills. The essence of our project is to create sustainable habits among the local population regarding the management of bulky waste, which will contribute to reducing the amount of waste deposited in landfills, preventing or reducing the rate of creation of illegal landfills, increasing the rate of recycling and reuse, and finally, improving the quality environment in the city and beyond. Educational campaigns, promotion of successful stories about recycling, technological innovations, will contribute to the development of awareness and engagement of the local community, which will have a positive impact not only on the same, but also on the wider environment, promoting the principles of sustainable development and environmental protection.
